Process and Editing

We are both taking it in turns to edit all of the photographs from the photo shoot and to edit and put all of our footage together.

The photos have been taken from both mine and Katie't shoot and we have edited a few from one another's whilst the other one has been working on the video. We both think that if we worked on different parts of the project it will get done and we can look at what we have done and discuss and then change anything later.

Photoshoot

Over half term we started filming and doing photoshoots of our artist so that we have a range of footage and photos for the video and the promotional side of things such as posters and the leaflets for the inside of the CD.
Our shoot was done at the ruins of Waverly Abbey. We thought that this would look good because it is a very old building which is what we wanted. Farnham Castle wouldn't let us shoot anything there so we had to find somewhere which had a similar atmosphere.

We will be editing the photographs over the next week to make them look better. These are the unedited versions of the photos:

Farnham Castle

After e-mailing Farnham Castle for permission to use the grounds to film part of our music video we received a message saying that they could not provide this facility any longer. Katie soon came up with the idea of shooting at Waverly Abbey. As it is public grounds we would not have to get permission to film in this area.

Animatic Storyboard

The animatic storyboard is a sketched music video, using photo cut outs of the drawn storyboard. Me and Katie, split this job between and I had to draw the pictures and work out all the timings, she got to find the music and edit them together.

We found that some of the frames were a bit too long for the music we had, so we did have to cut them down a bit. This didn't take very long as we just wanted to get a fair idea of what it would be like.

The storyboard might not be the final official outcome and may change during the filming process.

Updated ideas

As it is now impossible for us to travel to Brighton in the time that we have, we are sticking with using the local town. As we will be shooting during half term, we decided that if we shot on the night of Farnham Fireworks, we could use the candle light procession tradition and have her singing there. It would be a pretty part to what we are doing and it would look amazing with our chosen song.

We also need to have a part of our storyline

Location Review

Photoshoot Plan

For our poster and other parts of our coursework such as the digi-paks, I am going to do a photoshoot with Susanna in our locations. I have talked to Susanna about the type of clothes I think she should wear for the different locations.

The Locations for the shoot are Farnham castle and Gostrey Meadows. Both of these will feature in the music video. The final location, will be a multi-story car park. I like the idea of having a different location for a shoot as it give us a range of photo types to choose from and we could potentially use a different location for the front cover design, or even the booklet thats included in the CD packaging.

For one shoot, she is going to wear  a white dress, pink heels and wear red lipstick. In another one, a white top and black jeans and a black leather jacket. The final shoot's outfit still needs to be decided, but I am talking to her about this nearer to the date.

Storyboard 2

After doing a first draft of our storyboard, I wanted to develop the ideas more and doing this resulted into another storyboard and a more in depth one. I have used a wider range of shots, and shortened the length of each slot. This makes is more interesting, Once we have done this we will to think about how to link them all together so it isn't jumping to the next shot suddenly, they need to flow. If this was to happen it wouldn't matter how good our footage was, it would look very wooden and unprofessional. This is only a draft of our video and may change throughout the process.

Shot 1 - Close Up (3 Seconds)
This is a close up of Susanna's face, I thought that If it filled the frame, it would be an interesting start to a music video and different as the majority of music videos would usually start with an establishing shot.

Shot 2 - High Shot (2 Seconds)
As one of our locations is Farnham Castle grounds, I thought using a high shot in this clip would work well because it is short and snappy. If we shot it at night, or early evening, we would have the effect of the town lights in the background. A high shot works really well because you get a different point of view.

Shot 3 - Mid Shot (4 Seconds)
One of the shots in Emelie Sandé's video is of her on the swings in a children's play park. Another one of our locations is Gostrey Meadow. This means we have access to a park and I really liked this shot in the artists video, so want to see what it looked like on ours. I put this here, because when listening to the lyrics, I could see Susanna gently rocking on the swings whilst singing this line.

Shot 4 - Long Shot (4 Seconds)
Still being in Gostrey's, I thought another shot could be around the trees. Again this is another fairly short shot. I need to think about the movement of Susanna when filming as it might change.

Shot 5 - Close Up (4 Seconds)
Another close up here would work because it is the beginning part to the chorus. Then I want the end of this shot to cut straight to the next.

Shot 6 - Mid Shot (3 Seconds)
I want this to be a straight cut from the previous shot. Once again shot in Gostrey's, I see this line being shot on the bridge above the river in the meadow. I think this should been done once it's fairly dark and we can project light onto her and see how that turns out.

Shot 7 - Low Shot (3 Seconds)
Another shot done at Farnham Castle, I want it to pan slightly around the front of Susanna before flowing into the next shot.

Shot 8 - Tilt to Sky (6 Seconds)
From the panning low shot in the previous shot, I want the camera to go straight from that to a tilt to the sky. This shot starts off as an instrumental piece before the lyrics come into it.

Shot 9 - Side Shot (part of the 6 Seconds in the previous shot)
We want to have a fade out effect, and splitting Shot 8 and 9 to make each shot last for about 3 seconds each. I think a fade effect would work really well in this song because it is quite emotional and the fade we are going to attempt to put in on the instrumental half of this shot.

Shot 10 - Low Shot (3 Seconds)
The shot will be of Susanna watching a group of boys hanging around. I think that this shot would work amazingly well if we did it a Farnham Castle. I think if we had Susanna stood at a higher level watching down on the group of lads in the grounds. We can try and fit both the group and Susanna in on the same shot. However this does only last for 3 seconds.

Shot 11 - Low Shot (4 Seconds)
This would be filmed, with us stood at the bottom of Castle Street in town and Susanna's walking down. If this was filmed at night or early evening, the lights would give an emotional effect within it. I think this would work really well with this song.

Shot 12 - Side Shot (7 seconds)
When thinking about this lyric and our locations, I could imagine Susanna being stood on the bridge in Gostrey's. If we filmed from the side with her looking straight on, instead of the camera. She could even walk away from us, to show that she's walking away from the message to the song.

Shot 13 - High Shot (8 seconds)
Back to Farnham Castle, in the grounds is Susanna, and the camera is above on one of the higher levels. I think we could pan the camera when she sings this because the song begins to heat up and starts getting a bit faster.

Shot 14 - Long Shot (10 Seconds)
I really liked the shot on the swings and think it works really, really well in this song. Instead of having a closer shot of Susanna, I would think about standing back, possibly the outside fence of the park just so it has a different view and angle as the previous shot which is similar to this one.

Shot 15 - Mid Shot (11 Seconds)
The top half of Susanna shot in Farnham Castle stood in front of the town background would look good at this spot. This isn't a close up, which makes it that much more effective because instead of just her facial expressions, the audience can assess her body language towards the song to see if they match.

Shot 16 - Wide Shot (6 Seconds)
Like the shot where Susanna was stood watching the boys, I think she should walk past them watching them play football in the meadow. This links to the lyrics 'When the friends you thought you had haven't stuck around' Susanna's walking past her friends who are ignoring her.

Shot 17 - Mid Shot (7 Seconds)
Stood in front of Farnham Castle, instead of having the town as the background, I think the actual castle would look really good too, and you have it on a different level as well.

Shot 18 - Close Up (6 Seconds)
The fade effect is really popular in this type of song. I think if she sings this lyric and the this shot fades out as she's singing. This is a fairly long shot for this video, and if it just slowly goes out, I think it would work really well.

Shot 19 - Long Shot (3 Seconds)
Unlike the long shot of Susanna walking down Castle street, I think she should begin to walk up it but on the other side so it looks different. It's as if she's walking away from 'the party.'

Shot 20 - Wide Shot (5 Seconds)
Instead of using just the swings in Gostrey's, I think we should use more of the available equipment there. I like the idea of having Susanna on the springy-horse thingy, that children like to play on. I think that this would add a bit more 'life' to the video.

Shot 21 - Establishing Shot (9 Seconds)
I want to put a shot of the park that we are using completely empty with a bit of movement, such as the roundabout moving and the springy-horse thingy moving. And then we either cut to Susanna back on the springy thingy such as the shot before, or she walks  slowly in from one side of the park.

Shot 22 - Long Shot (7 Seconds)
I think Susanna should stand in the left hand side of the frame for this shot. Just to give it a different type of edge to it. If it is shot at night, it would look really dark and mysterious, We would just need to sort out some type of lighting.

Shot 23 - Side Shot (6 Seconds)
If Susanna walked across the screen looking forward and didn't look directly into the camera, it would emphasise the emotion to this song.

Shot 24 - Wide Shot (8 seconds)
If she just carried on walking from the last shot, I think she should carry on walking across the bridge. All of the walking she does throughout out the video needs to be done fairly slowly, and to the beat of the music.

Shot 25 - High Shot (9 Seconds)
I think the high shots for the start of the chorus works really well and I think there should be another one here. The lights of the town in the background does give a very different atmosphere and it should be one that is carried through the video.

Shot 26 - Close Up (5 Seconds)
Over this 5 second shot, I want this clip to slowly fade out. A fade out would also work really well with this line of lyrics. This part should be filmed at Farnham Castle.

Shot 27 - Long Shot (5 Seconds)
I like it when Susanna walks slowly down Castle Street and I think that the lights would reflect brilliantly.

Shot 28 - Mid Shot (12 Seconds)
The mid shot give the audience the chance to have a different view of Susanna and also capture the background. This shot's lyrics are very emphasised and I think that a mid shot would portray the emotion that it involved.

Shot 29 - Mid Shot (5 Seconds)
This shot could potentially continue from the previous one. This is a kind of repeat shot, where Susanna will stand and watch her group of friends leave her or walk past her without any acknowledgment.

Shot 30 - High Shot (6 Seconds)
If we film this shot on a higher level of the Castle and Susanna stands on the lawn, the camera should pan around the top of her creating an emotional level.

Shot 31 - Mid Shot (4 Seconds)
As we get to the last few lines of the song, I like the idea of a mid shot. This shot will be done at Gostrey meadows, in front of the trees or on the bridge.

Shot 32 - Mid Shot (5 Seconds)
Back at Farnham Castle, another mid shot, which carries on from the previous shot.

Shot 33 - Mid Shot (5 Seconds)
Then a flick back to Gostrey Meadows, again, carrying on from the previous shot.

Shot 34 - Close Up (11 Seconds)
As the final clip, I think the words 'My Kind Of Love' should be written on a glass and then slowly comes closer to the camera.

Location

We have got rid of the idea of using Brighton Pier and are just using Farnham Castle and Gostrey Meadow. The locations are really nice and would go really well with this song. As we are shooting in October it will mostly likely rain and be windy. Me and Katie have planned for this type of weather and have decided that it might look better.

Farnham Castle is quite rustic and the song is sung in a rough edge style.

The above two photos are of the lawn area at Farnham Castle. I think if we used different shots of her on this it would look really good. Also, the town is included in the background, Susanna will be on her own. After discussing the times of when we should shoot, we think it will look better if we shoot at night, because of all the lights that will be included.

Gostrey Meadows is actually situated in the town of Farnham. It is a big place, and we think that we could use most aspects of it, inlcuding the bridge and the children's park.

The Song

Our chosen song for our music video is My  Kind of Love by Emelie Sandé. As we know a somebody who can sing, we are going to be using her as our singer for our video.

Our video is going to portray a similar but not exactly the same message. We watch the artists video beforehand over and over so we were able to pick out bits of her video that we are able to use in ours

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_siYfZDh5w

The above link is to the Official Video to 'My Kind of Love.'

Some of the material thats included in the video, I think we could use in ours. I like the scene where she's sat on the swings in an deserted children's park. This is an emotional scene in the video and I thin we can somehow incorporate it into ours.

Dates

We need to be on top of everything throughout this production. We wanted to plan out when we were going to do things, when by and where (if we were filming.)

10th October - 17th October - More Planning
15th October - 25th October - PhotoShoot with Susanna at Farnham Castle and Gostrey Meadows.
25th October - 30th October - Edit the photos form the PhotoShoot
22nd October - Susanna's coming into college to record her version of the song.
23rd October - 6th November - Filming the music video (Farnham Castle, Gostrey Meadows. anywhere else which we may find appropriate)
3rd November - Filming at Farnham Fireworks, using the candlelit procession.
6th November - 5th December - Start editing, making posters, digi-packs etc.

We hope to have our finished video and products linked to the media done by the time we finish for Christmas on 21st December. This gives us over 2 months to finish planning, designing and filming.

Poster designs

For our poster design I was thinking that we had a black and white photo of Susanna with white writing. The name of the album should be in a sweet, curly type of writing to make it soft and stand out from the background. For the name, It should also be in white writing and it should be bold but not overpowering.

I am going to do a few designs of the poster before settling and editing on a final one. We will need to organize a photo shoot with Susanna and find a couple of locations where to do it. I think if we get this done in the next 2 weeks (from 8th October) we can edit them and work on the posters.

We could possibly use the studio at college so we have a white background to use as well as the lighting advantage. However we could also use the locations we are looking at using for our music video.

I have done a few designs of the poster which are very basic. I think they will look a lot better once we have done the photoshoot of Susanna.

Poster Design 1:

This poster is very basic because I didn't have access to PhotoShop when creating it. However, I think the simplicity of the design works well because it stands out. The red on black background with white writing makes the poster bold. I think a poster really needs a photograph but this poster could work around public buildings.

Poster Design 2

Again, another very basic design but effective. This time the background is white and I thought that the hearts on the right hand side would give it some edge. This time I used Bold, Black writing to emphasize the poster. The most appealing part of this simplistic design are the red hearts on the side. As I said, a poster would look so much better with an actual photograph.

Storyboard Draft

The song we have chosen to do is 'My Kind of Love' by Emelie Sandé. After watching the music video for her version we look at how we could make it different with a similar meaning to the song. We have gone for relatively short clips for each section of the song. This is so we can collect a number of shots portraying different emotions and seeing which one would work best for the song.

For the storyboard, I have used the timescale of the song to find out where all of the cuts and change of scenes need to be.

Shot 0:00-0:20

This shot is a close up of our singer. I thought that this would work because the first 20 seconds of the song is almost spoken but with a harmony. I think that this would work in front of a black background with a few lights on her, this is so it isn't a harsh tone and is quite soft to start off the video.

Shot 0:20-0:23

This is only a 3 second shot but I think that a quick shot of piano keys would make the video look quite good.

Shot 0:23-0:43

We were thinking of using Farnham Castle as half of our location plan. The grounds are quite big, and it would look really effective if there was more background behind when singing. If we shot somewhen during the day or in the early evening it would look quite beautiful, relating to the message linked to the song.

Shot 0:43-1:02

Another location we were looking at using is Gostrey Meadows. As it is quite a big place, it also has a river, bridge, few trees and a children's park. We could potentially incorporate all of these into this music video.

Shot 1:02-1:25

This is the shot thats in the second half of the chorus. I think it would be effective if we had a shot of the singer stood on the bridge with the river going underneath. This would also look pretty good if it was raining, as it is a fairly meaningful song and we want it to carryon like that.

Shot 1:25-1:39

Again if the shot after the chorus was in Gostrey Meadows, we could use the swings in the children's park, just to show that there is some uplift to the song and it is all depressing.

Shot 1:39-2:09

Another close up of the singer would be effective here because it is the first bit of the second chorus and I think it would look meaningful.

Shot 2:09-2:18

The story board show the singer walking away from a heart in this shot. It doesn't necessarily have to be a heart, but something to represent Love. It could even be a person she's walking away from.

Shot 2:18-2:31

I thought that a fade in effect would look good here. Its basically a two shot but shot with different people in 2 different locations. The left hand side of the shot would be the 'blurred, faded' effect and the other half i think would look emphasised if the colour was sort of 'muddy.'

Shot 2:31-2:53

This shot is too be of our singer singing into a recording microphone in a 'studio' area. Or we could take it and shot at one of our other locations. We want this shot to be a one off and it will last about 20 seconds. I think if we shot this at different angles it would look really effective.

Shot 2:53-3:07

This will be the last shot of our singer. A close up on her face to fill the frame speaking (with a harmony) to the last part of the song.

Shot 3:07-3:19

This is the last part of the song. I thought having the words 'My Kind Of Love' written on a window in steamed up writing or in wipe board pen to give it the ending effect. I though it would be appropriate as this is the title to the song.

Planning - Locations

We are looking at locations on whereabouts we can shoot our music video. We have come up with a couple of ideas which we really like and are considering combining them together. We are looking into using Brighton Pier and Farnham Castle. We think that these two locations would fit in really well with what we have planned.

We have considered weather conditions such as rain, and have chosen a song that would suit all weather and if it rains it would just add dramatical effect.

We do however need to look into contacting farnham castle and asking if we can use their grounds to film parts of our video. If not, we need to come up with another idea.

Music Video Teaser Research

I had a look at a few different teaser trailers for music videos and looked at how much of the actual video they contained. You don't normally see teasers on TV unless its music channels such as MTV, they are however often released on YouTube.

Katy Perry - Last Friday Night (TGIF)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ghe52kEPpAQ

The link above is the teaser trailer to 'Last Friday Night (TGIF)' by Katy Perry.

This is the first shot in the trailer for 'Last Friday Night' This is not featured in the real video. The music playing when this shot is used is not part of the song either.

This shot is featured in the real music video. The music when this shot is on screen is once again not part of the song. Making the video look real fun and interesting.

This is the first shot in the trailer when the music from the actual video is used. It is quite upbeat and the shot shows the singer looking geeky and people would think that looking like this you wouldn't be able to have fun.

Research Task 2

The second part of the research was to look at CD covers and to see how we could use the different angles and colour schemes for when it comes to promoting our music video. In a way, I think that the album photo needs to have some sort of link to the main video.

Adele - 21

There is no eye contact and she is looking down, making the effect quite mysterious.
I think this cover contrasts really well with the music which is included on the CD. The music that she tends to do is quite meaningful and emotional.

The design on this cover is very simple. The frame is filled mainly by the musician. The whole design is in greyscale with the only colour being the ‘21’ in the bottom right hand corner.

The lighting which has been used is soft, but light enough to produce a clear complexion, with the cover going darker where the name of the album is.

The angles in which she has been positioned are quite striking and bold making it stand out a bit more.

The Wanted

The name of the album cover is in block, white writing spread across the top. It is white so that it stands out from the background which is quite dark.

Most of the group are using eye contact to draw people to it. There is an exception of one, maybe two that aren’t using eye contact and looking elsewhere. It depends how different people interpret it.

Nearly the whole of the design is dark. The lighting is fairly light because you see the background detail and the musicians are quite well lit.

It is another fairly basic design with the band at the front, sort of laid out like a triangle going towards the back.

Bon Jovi

The title of the band is included on the design but not the name of the album, expressing it’s a self named album. The text is in a peachy colour on a black border making it stand out.

There is quite a lot of lighting in this. Some coming from the vehicles in the background. It looks as though there might be some fairly harsh lighting from the front of them because it has made them look fairly pale.

There is a 3 sided black border on the top, bottom and right hand sides. This contains a photograph of a street at night with the musicians standing in the middle of the road.
